Spinocerebellar Ataxia
Here's the other Jdorama I bought, in english it's 1 Litre of Tears. It's a true story about a 15 year old girl named Aya Kito. This drama is an adaptation of her diary, which was also published as a novel.
The story starts when she started to loose balance and tripped often which her mother soon noticed which made them consult a neurologist, she later then found out that her daughter is suffering from Spinocerebellar Ataxia (a disease with no cure, and the cause which is commonly unknown); it's a cause due to the shrinking of the cerebellum. The story continued on as the symptoms of the disease got worsed. She suffered 10 years under this disease but she never lost faith and hoped, she continued on dreaming. On the age of 25 she died on the hospital bed surrounded by flowers and her family.
Spinocerebellar Ataxia
Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) is one of a group of genetic disorders characterized by slowly progressive incoordination of gait and often associated with poor coordination of hands, speech, and eye movements. Frequently, atrophy of the cerebellum occurs.
The symptoms of the condition vary with the specific type, and with the individual patient. Generally, a person with ataxia retains full mental capacity but may progressively lose physical control.
Spinocerebellar degeneration is a rare inherited neurological disorder of the central nervous system characterized by the slow degeneration of certain areas of the brain.
Ataxia
Ataxia is an aspecific clinical manifestation implying dysfunction of parts of the nervous system that coordinate movement, such as the cerebellum.
Sensory ataxia is employed to indicate ataxia due to loss of proprioception which generally depends on dysfunction of the dorsal columns of the spinal cord, in some cases, the cause may instead be dysfunction of the various brain parts that receive that information, including the cerebellum, thalamus, and parietal lobes. Sensory ataxia presents with an unsteady "stomping" gait with heavy heel strikes, as well as postural instability.
Vestibular ataxia is employed to indicate ataxia due to dysfunction of the vestibular system, which in acute and unilateral cases is associated with prominent vertigo, nausea and vomiting.
Non-hereditary causes of cerebellar degeneration include chronic ethanol abuse, paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration, high altitude cerebral oedema, coeliac disease, and normal pressure hydrocephalus.
There is no specific treatment for ataxia as such, although there may be for the underlying cause. The disability of ataxia may be reduced by physical therapy, including exercises, along with leg braces or shoe splints, if foot alignment has been affected; a cane or walker is often used in the effort to prevent falls.Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinocerebellar_ataxia

Aya suffered under this symptoms, at first she had a difficulty on walking, then soon after her eyes tend to loose focus, then soon after she can no longer walk properly, so she needed to use a wheelchair. After suffering those difficulties she soon had a hard time writting, speaking and eating. She also caught pneumonia due to the difficulties she's suffering.
